Headless Horseman, From Ireland to Sleepy Hollow

 



Everyone knows the legend of Sleepy Hollow, the headless knight, written by Washington Irving. But not many know its origins, which is not the version happening in Tarrytown during the 17th century. I am talking about an old Irish legend, coming from the iron-age. The Dullahan was the precursor of the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow, with a myth just as sinister. To many, the Dullahan was the harbinger of death. This was due to that he only called for the name of his victims, and nobody could stop him. The only way to protect yourself from him was to through precious metal on the ground. This is for this reason that people would leave gold in from of their homes.

Vlad Dracula, Rise of the Impaler

  We already talked about vampires quite a bit on this blog. Dracula himself was already mentioned in the Dearg Due post a while ago. Today, I thought it would be nice for this famous prince of Walachia to receive his own post. Bring on the stakes, the Impaler has arrived. Vlad III Dracula, the son of Vlad II Dracul, prince and then ruler of Walachia, is a pretty controversial figure. Though in his homeland of modern Romania, he is revered as a national hero and one of the defenders of Europe against the Ottoman expansion, in other places he is viewed as a cruel tyrant. And both sides are kind of true. You see, Walachia was at the time, in a difficult position. Stuck between the behemoth Ottoman Empire and the mighty Kingdom of Hungary, the tiny principality was in a fishy position. Try ally with one and the other will steam role through your lands. The Hashshashins, Real Life Assasin's Creed

I think most people have at least heard of the Assassin’s Creed series, created and managed by Ubisoft. For those unfamiliar with it, the games follow a shadow war between the Order of Assassins (the “good” side) and the Templars (the “bad” side) across human history. There are also odd plotlines about  an ancient civilization  and lost artifacts, but  that’s  not the topic here.  In reality, both  factions did exist, though they were drastically different from their video-game counterparts. The Order of Assassins, or  Hashshashins , was a militant sect defending the Nizari Ismaili Muslims from their enemies, who were mostly other Muslims.
